Posts by Allison

Allison is currently living out the elaborate fantasy she described to her now-former staff and colleagues in early 2001. With a hearty dose of courage and absolutely no plan of action, she abruptly left her middle-management job to become a writer—and today she is doing just that in her role as Baudville's Senior Content Writer. She's here to tell you everything she's learned in her 20-years+ professional life, plus a lot more. She's wordy like that!

Want Workplace Happiness and Harmony? Take it Outside.

Even if you love your job, you probably still spend a little time Sunday night in denial that Monday is just a few hours away. I do and I do.

But last Monday was different, because several of us in Baudville’s creative group were looking forward to an afternoon field trip to a letterpress studio in downtown Grand Rapids. One of our design interns has a small setup called Not Design and she was more than happy to let us invade her space for a few hours to learn about old-school printmaking—a very hands-on process that’s a far cry from the high-tech computerized graphic design and desktop publishing tools we use today.

How to have more fun at work with Positive Praise!

I'm not going to tell you that it's all fun & games up here in creative-ville, but every once in awhile, we do get to have a laugh. We certainly did when we were working on the new Positive Praise recognition theme. The Goofy Guy Squeezable Praise became everyone’s favorite new projectile and the Goofy Guy Pens were the perfect remedy whenever things started to get a little too tense.

Having fun at work not only lowers stress and improves morale, it can also increase productivity. I’ve see it first hand in our department, but this WorldatWork article does a great job of backing me up as well.

If you need to have more fun in your office, our Positive Praise theme is an excellent place to start. Maybe you took the quiz in that link I just posted. If so, let’s see how you scored.

If you answered mostly no, I’m afraid your situation is pretty grave. You’re going to need to take serious measures to increase employee morale. For this, I prescribe:

Employee Recognition Can Be as Easy as a High Five

Today is National High Five Day and, without a doubt, this is a Baudville kind of holiday. We’re all about incorporating easy recognition into our daily lives and bringing that same idea to life in many of our products as well.

Many companies approach the concept of employee recognition with some trepidation, fearing that it will be a complicated, time consuming, and expensive undertaking. But imagine if it were as easy as giving a high five. Or, a “proverbial” high five.

We designed our new Great Job theme with simple gestures of appreciation in mind, because we know that if recognition is straightforward and easy, it can be as natural as a pat on the back, a fist bump, or a thumbs up from across the room.

This is where the flagship of our Great Job theme, the Cheers Kit™, comes in. It’s packed with five different recognition notes (40 in all, actually), each with a keepsake element and a simple, universal message.

Keep this kit on hand, and in a matter of seconds, you can give a sincere expression of appreciation with an impact that lasts way beyond the initial gesture. All for about $1.00 per note.

Recognition that’s easy, quick, and cheap? I’ll give that a high five!

Allison is Baudville’s one (and only) Copywriter. She’s been writing for a variety of media for more than eight years, so if she tells you she has been there and done that, she probably has. Before embarking on a career in writing, Allison worked as a department manager where she used Baudville products to motivate her team. She’s what we call a true believer!
